Log Homes Across the Country (and the World)

There are a lot of ideas that pop up in peoples’ minds when they hear someone mention a log home.  It’s true that many people associate log homes with northern climates in rural areas.  And while we, as a New England based company, do agree that log homes are a perfect fit for our region, we also know that log homes can be built in any part of the country – even the world.  Here are some of our favorite examples on how log homes are a great choice for any region.

California

This stunning log home has a truly grand exterior.  Details on the home such as the front door, and exterior lighting, exudes a mission style which is a fitting choice for a California log home.

Oklahoma

This log home was built on Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees to serve as a gathering place for the whole family.  The sloping site and access to the lake give this log home a real draw.  It was built in a popular development and is right at home next to the other traditional homes (but with much more character).

Wisconsin

Log homes are just as at home in the South as they are in other regions.  This log home shown above is a great example.  It has many classic log home elements such a stone chimney and lots of windows.

Italy

Celebrate the Romance of a Log Home or Cabin This Winter

With Valentine’s Day less than a month away, and cold weather keeping us too chilled to want to spend much time outdoors, now is the time to think about all the romance a log home or log cabin can bring.  To help make your log home winter the most romantic, we have five things you need to set the perfect scene.

1)      A log home in the wilderness

This log home glows with warmth and comfort as a storm approaches.

Nothing is more romantic than coming home to a log home in the evening.  Surrounded by looming storms and winter’s chill, a log home or cabin glows with warmth and comfort.  Of course the great thing about a log home is that whether it’s built in the wilds of Montana, or on a small lot in the suburbs of Charlotte, NC – it will always be cozy and warm – the perfect backdrop for romance.

2)      Cozy furniture

This log home great room has large leather sofas, chairs and love seats – the perfect place to cozy up with a loved one and enjoy a movie.

After a long day of work or recreation, it’s great to cozy up on some over sized pieces of furniture.  After all, it wouldn’t be a romantic log home experience if the furniture weren’t big enough for two to cuddle on.

3)      A roaring Fire

log cabin with stone fireplace

A warm fireplace with a hearth big enough to sit on and warm up is a functional and romantic addition to a log home or cabin.

This may sound cliché, but not much can compare to a roaring fireplace.  Not only does it help to cut through the chill of a room, its crackling hiss and flickering flame add an air of romance to a dark cold night.  Of course, even for non-romantic occasions, it’s a fabulous addition to a log home or cabin (particularly for those who also are in love with s’mores.)

4)      Dinner for two

log home kitchen with island

A romantic dinner for two doesn’t need to involve setting up the dining table. Keep the evening more intimate and consider sharing a meal right in the kitchen.

Sharing a meal together is a classic way to spend time with the one you love.  There’s no need to eat at a large dining table when there’s only two people.  Keep the occasion intimate with a setting just for two.  Put the same level of effort into the meal itself, but no need to be too formal.  After all, we’re looking for romance, not a formal dinner party.

5)      A jetted tub

log home master bathroom with jetted tub

This log home in Fairbanks, AK has a master bathroom with a large jetted tub next to a bay window. It’s the perfect place to unwind with a glass of wine and watch the snow fall.

Perhaps it is another trite feature, but a big tub made for two adds just the right amount of romance to a log home or cabin.  Particularly if your log home or cabin is a second home where you’ll be doing a lot of skiing, snow shoeing, hiking or other strenuous outdoors activities, having a place to soak tired muscles and unwind is important.

The weather is calling for sunny skies in the mid 80s and you’ve got a log home situated on one of the best lakes in Missouri. This is undoubtedly a recipe for any successful gathering – but for a 4th of July celebration, you want to make sure your yard is extra ready. Patio furniture can be the best addition to any deck. The second floor log home deck shown above is made even more relaxing by comfortable outdoor seating. I love the full log post railings!

Moving from outdoor relaxation to indoor, we find ourselves in the spacious custom log home kitchen. While Aunt Ginny prepares her famous potato salad and your dad puts the finishing touches on the secret recipe barbecue sauce, take in the beauty of what surrounds you. It’s fairly uncommon to have a full log gable-end cathedral kitchen – and this home showcases this uniqueness perfectly.

Adjacent to the kitchen, we’re able to see the soaring cathedral ceiling on display as well as two structural support beams. These beams provide support to the roof while adding full log aesthetics to the interior of the log home great room.

A Montana Log Home: Real Log Homes Goes Custom

All log homes are not created equal. This week, instead of focusing on the same element in multiple homes, we’re featuring just one truly incredible log home in southern Montana. It’s a custom designed and constructed log home made even more beautiful by the soaring Montana mountains in the backdrop.

Whenever I see the picture below, my initial reaction is always, WOW. The landscape of Montana is the perfect companion for any log home and the home itself captures the true essence of log home living. We’ll begin our tour from the exterior and work our way inside.

Custom Log Home Montana

This custom log home nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountain Range is a bit unusual in that it utilizes the gambrel roof line. A gambrel roof is more commonly found in Dutch Colonial homes and barns, but on a log home it offers a refreshing approach that is anything but ordinary. From an architectural standpoint, this log home is a feast for the eyes.

Dormers are an excellent way of adding square footage and natural light to your log home. The three gable dormers (also known as dog-house dormers) shown above add significant head room to smaller square footed spaces while allowing plentiful sunlight into your home.

Log Home Farmers Porch

A farmers porch provides the perfect space for shade on this rustic log home. Accompanied by half-log rafters, the wrap around farmers porch (shown above) denotes true country charm and relaxation.

Log Home Great Room

While a great room is only as ‘great’ as the people who come together there, what makes this log home great room is its soaring ceiling height. The full log floor joists (directly above the love seat), while aesthetically pleasing, carry the load of the loft space above. I love that the fireplace hearth is used for the wood stove in the great room, while it’s a true working fireplace on the other side.

Log Home Fireplace

Log Home Dining Room

A bright and beautiful dining nook is the perfect accessory to any log home kitchen.

Log Home Master BedroomWe end the Montana log home tour with the master bedroom with custom furniture. You can see here how the gambrel style roof could make a room feel cavernous, but with double-hung windows on two walls, the master is bright and spacious.

Lighting Up Your Log Home with Natural Light

We’re entering into the absolute best time of year; when the days are longer and it stays light until well past 8pm. The afternoon sun can be warm, but it also lights up your log home in a way that no table lamp could ever do. Through windows, sky lights and with the help of great rooms – the beauty of a log home can be found during the late afternoon when the sun hits the logs and your home is illuminated. Let’s check out some amazing summer sunlight log home photos to see what I mean.

Sky Light, Sky Bright

Log Home Dining Room | Log Home Sky Lights

The log home sun room above doubles as a dining room and uses a ton of afternoon sun to light the room. The three sky lights above the three double-hung windows showcase the view outside as well as light up the view on the inside of this beautiful home. The homeowners also made a great choice not to have grilles on any of the windows which makes for unobstructed views of the property outside.

Log Home Entertainment Room | Log Home Addition

The log home addition above was strictly for fun and games. The home owners wanted an entertainment room addition and in order to create natural light in an area with mid-level knee walls, sky lights were a fantastic option. With three sky lights on either side of the ridge line, the area feels balanced and well lit as the afternoon sun fills the room.

Gable End Sunlight

Log Home Great Room | Lighting in Your Log Home

The log home loft space above uses the gable end wall of windows to allow an abundance of natural light and creates terrific ambiance. The custom fixed glass windows make the room feel open while allowing those who sit in this amazing space to get a full view of the lush green property outside.

Log Home Great Room | Log Home Natural Light

Here is another gable end great room where the room is drenched with late afternoon light. You may have noticed that all of the windows in the log homes featured so far don’t have grilles. Not using grilles on your windows can be less costly when building your log home and it may also help to display the beautiful views outside. Just outside the doors of the great room above, there’s a large deck overlooking quite the landscape!
