Lighting Up Your Log Home with Natural Light

We’re entering into the absolute best time of year; when the days are longer and it stays light until well past 8pm. The afternoon sun can be warm, but it also lights up your log home in a way that no table lamp could ever do. Through windows, sky lights and with the help of great rooms – the beauty of a log home can be found during the late afternoon when the sun hits the logs and your home is illuminated. Let’s check out some amazing summer sunlight log home photos to see what I mean.

Sky Light, Sky Bright

Log Home Dining Room | Log Home Sky Lights

The log home sun room above doubles as a dining room and uses a ton of afternoon sun to light the room. The three sky lights above the three double-hung windows showcase the view outside as well as light up the view on the inside of this beautiful home. The homeowners also made a great choice not to have grilles on any of the windows which makes for unobstructed views of the property outside.

Log Home Entertainment Room | Log Home Addition

The log home addition above was strictly for fun and games. The home owners wanted an entertainment room addition and in order to create natural light in an area with mid-level knee walls, sky lights were a fantastic option. With three sky lights on either side of the ridge line, the area feels balanced and well lit as the afternoon sun fills the room.

Gable End Sunlight

Log Home Great Room | Lighting in Your Log Home

The log home loft space above uses the gable end wall of windows to allow an abundance of natural light and creates terrific ambiance. The custom fixed glass windows make the room feel open while allowing those who sit in this amazing space to get a full view of the lush green property outside.

Here is another gable end great room where the room is drenched with late afternoon light. You may have noticed that all of the windows in the log homes featured so far don’t have grilles. Not using grilles on your windows can be less costly when building your log home and it may also help to display the beautiful views outside. Just outside the doors of the great room above, there’s a large deck overlooking quite the landscape!

Welcome To Holiday Decorating Season!

Log Home Front Door With Christmas WreathWith December knocking on the door, and Thanksgiving behind us, it’s the right time of year for decorating your log home to celebrate the holiday season.  What better way to welcome friends and family into your log home than with cheerful decor and lights galore!

Whether you and your family celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanza – or if you simply enjoy the beauty of this time of year – we hope you’ll enjoy seeing some photos of our log homes decorated for the season!

We’ll start, of course, at the entrance to your home.  It’s a great place to begin your holiday decorating, as it’s the first impression your guests will have when coming to visit.

Log Home Front Porch With Christmas TreesThis first log home entrance shows a simple, refined level of decorating.  Two Christmas trees with minimal garland, flank the entrance.  A small wooden basket rests near the front, full of pine cones and boughs – as if just collected.  A small, old wooden sleigh leans casually against the corner post.  It’s a simple arrangement, that works well with the striking effect of the dark porch posts.

Log Home Porch Decorated For ChristmasThis log home front porch, goes a bit beyond the level of simple and refined – and jumps right into the land of pure fun.  Garland spirals up around large log posts, reminiscent of candy cane stripes.  Large red bows make this log house look like a REAL™ present.  The front door is adorned with a wreath, and a rustic, wicker reindeer stands watch over the porch.  Icicles hanging from the porch roof, make this house feel like a magical frosted gingerbread house.  It really has all the charm, warmth and fun of a fairytale Christmas.

Log Home Great Room With Christmas TreeOne great feature about log home great rooms, is that they often have vaulted ceilings – and vaulted ceilings are great for showing off a great Christmas tree. This photo shows not only a beautifully decorated Christmas tree, but the table set with frosted pine branches and candles.  Even the deer hanging on the wall is feeling the holiday spirit (don’t worry , it’s not Blitzen)  The window sills have Amaryllis bulbs growing in them too – which is a great project to grow with children.  Be careful though, if the bulb is ingested, the Amaryllis can cause upset stomach.  (Real all about growing Amaryllis here)

Log Home With Christmas Lights in SnowAnd, finally, one of the real highlights of this season – the lights!  Log homes really do look great when dressed up with Christmas lights and a dusting of snow.  This log home has lights that run along the roof edges – which provides great definition of the home’s architectural lines.  You can see also, that the landscaping up-lights are on.  Landscaping lighting like this can be used to illuminate your home at any time of year.  And when your log home looks this good, why not shine some light on it?

Michigan Log Home With Christmas Lights in SnowWhile Real Log Homes® are built so weather-tight and energy-efficient that our homeowners don’t often get icicles hanging from their roofs – many go out of their way each Winter to hang up their own icicles.  We’re of course talking about the light icicles, as seen in this picture above – taken of one of our homes built in Michigan.  As the sun is sinking low – this log home beckons across the snow filled yard – its soft glow and warm interior calling visitors to come inside and warm their spirits.

We hope our photos have got you feeling the holiday spirit.  We’d love to hear your comments on how you like to decorate your home for the holidays, no matter which holiday you celebrate.  Simply click the link under this posting that says “LEAVE A COMMENT”

Modern Style Small Log Home

We love log homes, but even we can admit that it is possible to over-do logs.  When the walls, ceilings and floors are all logs or wood, it might not always be the best idea to use overly woodsy or rustic log furniture on top of all that.  In fact, a home with a lot of wood in the architecture is a great canvas for showcasing contrasting styles and textures.  This home below is one of my favorite log homes when it comes to decorating with contrasting styles.  In this case, the home is a small log home decorated with an eclectic modern style.

Modern Log Home Living RoomThis small log home uses modern furniture with the right scale to fit the limited square footage.  The tone of the log walls and ceiling joists is a blonde color, and the homeowners chose to contrast with those tones by introducing dark chocolate colored furniture and pops of bright green.  The look is clean, modern and inviting.

Modern log home living and dining roomThe chocolate color of the leather living room furniture is mirrored in the dining area.  I absolutely love the square green rug under the coffee table.  It’s just the right size for the space and adds such a fun and fresh feel. (Note the fireplace is a gas burning insert – vote for your favorite fire fixture in our poll on the right of the blog.)

Modern log home dining roomCrystals in a log home?  Why not?  This simple, understated log home light fixture adds a light and airy whimsy without looking cluttered or overpowering the small log home.  I would argue that this log home dining room lighting works just as well as any old antler chandelier.  Of course that’s not to say that antler chandeliers don’t work, but sometimes it’s just fun to do something different.

Modern log home kitchenThe fun, vivid green color is carried through to the modern log home kitchen.  While crystal details in the dining area provide nice contrast with the wood, in the kitchen the look of metal is the highlight.  Stainless steel appliances, hardware and faucet all stand out so beautifully surrounded by the warm wood tones.

Small log home modern bathroomThe half bathroom on the first floor of this small log home shows you can fit a lot of style into a small bathroom.  The room is accented with another bright citrus shade, this time vivid orange.  The modern sink is both stylish and a real space saver.

Modern log home stair wayThe stair case that leads from the main floor to the basement is open and airy to let an abundance of light illuminate the stairs.  That’s not only a smart and safe design, but the look is polished, clean and airy.  The space is delineated by another shift of color, this time to a deep aqua.  In a small log home like this one, it’s a great idea to show division between spaces with color changes instead of space eating walls or bulky furniture.  So while this not-so-big log home may embrace modern decor, it’s still a warm and inviting home and a real log home at heart.  For ideas on small pieces to add a modern flair to your home, or a place to source modern furniture pieces, visit Crate and Barrel.

Lighten up your log home

We hear it all the time, “Log homes are dark…” Maybe once upon a time they were, but with the great new energy-efficient windows available, log home customers are bringing in more and more light.  And one of our favorite trends is the use of uniquely grand lighting fixtures.  These aren’t your grandma’s crystal chandeliers.  Today’s homeowners are using an eclectic mix of metal and fabric to lighten up their homes:

Dining Table LightingWe love how this open space is better defined by hanging this gorgeous chandelier not in the center of the room, but offset to give more definition and focus to the dining space.

Chandelier of AntlersOf course, the use of antlers continues to be an ever popular design aesthetic.  We see antlers used a lot, especially in Western style log homes and log homes with a rustic feel.

Log Great Room Metal ChandelierWhen you’ve got a truly great space to fill, sometimes a truly great piece is what you need.  This customer had this metal chandelier custom designed to fit their space and it really helps to provide a feeling of scale to this log home great room.
