A July 4th Celebration: A Lakeside Real Log Home in Missouri

The 4th of July is America’s holiday. It marks that summer is in full swing and we look forward to celebrating the holiday by barbequing, swimming, playing badminton and other lawn games and of course, fireworks. In order to celebrate this great country in which we live, we must find an amazing location to host our annual party! The perfect venue to celebrate America is most certainly a Real Log Home. This week’s featured home is a fantastic lakeside log home located in Shell Knob, Missouri.

The weather is calling for sunny skies in the mid 80s and you’ve got a log home situated on one of the best lakes in Missouri. This is undoubtedly a recipe for any successful gathering – but for a 4th of July celebration, you want to make sure your yard is extra ready. The large and multi-level property is perfect for entertaining the crowds.

A closer view of the exterior of this lake side log home in Missouri demonstrates a home fit for fireworks! With the American flag raised at full staff on the second floor deck, we can’t help but notice the stunning details of the design of this home. Gable end webbing is a beautiful way of displaying intricate detail on your log home.

Outdoor Seating

Whether inside watching the cook work or outside taking in the views, a log home strives to be one thing above all else – comfortable.

Patio furniture can be the best addition to any deck. The second floor log home deck shown above is made even more relaxing by comfortable outdoor seating. I love the full log post railings!

Moving from outdoor relaxation to indoor, we find ourselves in the spacious custom log home kitchen. While Aunt Ginny prepares her famous potato salad and your dad puts the finishing touches on the secret recipe barbecue sauce, take in the beauty of what surrounds you. It’s fairly uncommon to have a full log gable-end cathedral kitchen – and this home showcases this uniqueness perfectly.

Adjacent to the kitchen, we’re able to see the soaring cathedral ceiling on display as well as two structural support beams. These beams provide support to the roof while adding full log aesthetics to the interior of the log home great room.

Lastly, a cozy log home sitting area complete with summer’s favorite furniture – the wicker chair. What the sitting area lacks in square footage it makes up for with its unique vaulted ceiling and full log rafters. Log homes are all about the little details!

Special Gifts to Enjoy in Your Log Home This Father’s Day

Our dads. The guys who carried us on their shoulders, taught us how to chop wood and fish. Sometimes dads can be the hardest people to shop for. Sure, they have their hobbies; hunting, fishing, gardening and taking apart complicated machinery and putting it back together. There’s always the go-to Father’s Day gift – socks, but a man can only have so many pairs of socks.

Let’s uncover some classic Father’s Day gift ideas:

Display His Memorabilia

Log Home Stone Fireplace

The mantle above a Real Log Home custom stone fireplace is the perfect place to display your father’s antique gun collection.

Your dad has a collection of antique rifles that are sitting in the back of a closet in your parent’s house. With your mom’s permission, polish those beauties back to life and head to your local hardware store for mounting tools. Install the mount when your dad is at work (or running errands) and after he goes to bed on Father’s Day Eve, gently place the newly polished guns on the their new mount. Make sure to put a hand written card on the mantle below as well. Dad will be blown away and love that he can admire his prized collectibles he’s always wanted to show off but never had the time to display!

Clean & Organize His Man-Cave

Log Home Custom Garage Addition

You’ve heard the phrase before but didn’t realize your home had one too. The garage, barn, shed – whatever the space your dad puts his tools, cars and heavy machinery is sure to be one of his favorite places hang out. This weekend, clean and organize your dad’s man-cave or buy him a new toy to store in it. In the photo above, a Real Log Home custom garage addition looks to be a place that could use another toy.

Log Home Garage

This is the same custom log home garage addition, but pictured above is the workshop bay area. Another idea would be to setup racks or shelving for your dad’s tools or organize his gardening machinery in a way that makes it easier for him to move stuff in and out. Score extra points on Father’s Day by mowing the lawn!

Build a Fire Pit

Log Home Custom Fire Pit

The back yard of this Real Log Home has a stone walkway leading down to a rustic fire pit.

You could also buy one, but the concept is the same. Create an outdoorsy space suitable to roast marshmallows, tell ghost stories and sit next to the camp fire with your “old man.” Simply dig a pit to put your logs in and put some chairs or benches in a circle around the pit. You could also buy a fire pit from your local Home Depot that sits on top of the ground. After dinner on Sunday, lead your dad to your fire pit spot and ask him to do the honors lighting the match. Have your Hershey’s chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers ready for roasting!

A Weekend Getaway

Log Home Country Cabin

You know that awesome Real Log Home cabin that’s been in your family for years? Take your dad there for a special Father’s Day fishing trip this weekend. Pack the rods, bait and tackle and head down to one of your dad’s favorite spots. Even if you don’t fish, spending quality time with dad is the only objective for this Sunday.

Getting your Real Log Home Ready For Barbecue Season

With Memorial Day weekend upon us, it’s time to clean your outdoor grills, uncover your pools and make sure your outdoor furniture is ready for your family. The task of getting your Real Log Home ready for the summer season seems daunting, but if you focus on one thing at a time on your ‘To Do’ list, you’ll feel less stressed and get everything accomplished with plenty of time to relax before the party starts.

Easy Flow of Traffic

There’s a reason we call it spring cleaning! We can’t have our family and friends bumping into patio furniture or the badminton set as they navigate around the property. Set aside some time to place outdoor furniture in convenient locations – where people will have easy access to sit down, but avoid tripping as they walk from your gorgeous kitchen onto your outdoor patio. When you walk around your home and yard, think of the most used paths where people will be walking. If your kitchen  leads onto your deck, make sure chairs are pushed away from doors and that doors are able to fully open without bumping into people sitting down.

Cooling Off

After barbequing and playing games on the lawn, a pool is the obvious choice for a quick cool-down during your summer festivities. The patio below offers quite a view of the log home resting atop a hill surrounded by lush vegetation. Be sure to sweep extraneous leaves or dirt off the patio and vacuum your pool so it looks extra inviting.

Comfortable Seating

It’s always fun to have games set up on the lawn when friends and family come over for a summer barbeque, but it’s just as important to make sure you have plenty of comfortable seats to take a load off. From cushioned patio chairs to chaise lounges – there are a number of options that will keep family and friends happy and relaxed.

Log Home Exterior Pool

The home above uses over sized wooden patio dining to create comfort for their guests. Adjacent to the outside dining, cushioned chaise lounge chairs are sprinkled around the amazing in-ground pool. One of my favorite features happens to be the pergola over the patio dining. This creates a great shaded space to escape the afternoon sun while hosting your party. This photo leads us right into our next topic…

Shaded Spaces

Log Home Deck

Hosting a Memorial Day weekend party is usually the kick-off to your summer festivities. During your barbeque, it’s important to remember that while guests love spending quality time with you outside, it’s equally as important to shade them from the sometimes scorching afternoon sun.  Utilizing spaces that offer a respite from the heat, while still enjoying your home, offers friends and family the best of both worlds.

The Real Log Home above demonstrates how you can host guests comfortably at your home, while providing shade from the heat.

The log home below incorporates my favorite summer dining furniture – a picnic table with benches! The wrap-around farmers porch casts constant shade throughout the summer and gives you a relaxing place to watch the birds and enjoy BBQ brisket with family.

Mom’s Favorite Log Home Features

This Sunday, we’ll be celebrating the amazing women who brought us into this world – our Mothers. If your Mom is anything like mine, she adores her log home and works hard to make it beautiful; from the flower beds outside to her amazing master bathroom. There are a multitude of features that people love most about their log homes, but in this post, I’ll be exploring the features in our Real Log Homes that make our Moms the happiest.

A Peaceful Office Corner

An office space (like the one below) seems like an afterthought, but in fact it’s an important space for any Mom who strives to be organized and craves a space to work while gazing outside. This particular home office lends itself to bird gazing and watching the kids playing in the yard. The stained cabinetry really brings out the warmth of the interior log walls while providing a classic take on the home office.

A Dream Mudroom

The below mudroom, with it’s precise shelving for organization, stacked washer and dryer and window-side folding table make this room one to be desired. Moms would rejoice if kids used the coat racks, kicked off their shoes and put them in their appropriate bins and threw their dirty soccer shirt directly in the washer. A mudroom like this one, from a design stand point, creates a space that serves dual purposes: it’s a stunning entrance that welcomes your family and guests, yet also doubles as your work space, where you arrange fresh cut flowers you picked from your garden and stay up to date on laundry duty. I must admit, with a room like this, I certainly wouldn’t mind folding laundry while checking on the yard outside the window. What wonderful afternoon light!

A Relaxing Master Suite

A master suite is a Moms sanctuary, a safe haven. Sure, the kids come in to snuggle on Saturday mornings and after a nightmare, but mostly it’s a place where Mom can relax after a long day. The master bedroom (shown below) is unique in that there is a bonus room: a LOFT! The corner wood stove on the brick hearth with winding gun metal staircase is a great juxtaposition to the natural beauty of the wood. The homeowners below definitely have the right idea.. breakfast in bed!

Few Moms would argue that taking a bubble bath this Sunday doesn’t sound enticing. The log home master bath (shown below) has features that most 5 star hotels strive for. Not to mention the fact that the marble  jacuzzi tub overlooking the private master deck means you can relax in complete silence (minus the birds chirping out of your window). This homeowner also had the ingenious idea of using kitchen fruit baskets for bathroom soaps!

A Beautiful Garden

It’s the time of year again when home owners begin planting new flowers, maintaining perennials and planting seeds for their vegetable gardens. A beautifully landscaped yard is something that brings my Mom great joy. It’s one of few hobbies where a tremendous amount of work is put in, and she can almost immediately see the fruits of her labor. The photo of the Real Log Home (below) has eye catching floral arrangements adorning the front walk way and natural  plants and shrubs on each side of the front entrance.

What aspect of your log home is your Mom’s favorite? You can leave a comment here on our blog, or on the Real Log Homes Facebook page. Happy Mother’s Day!

Landscaping For Easy Log Home Maintenance

Log home maintenance is a very common subject that a lot of people have questions about.  In general, the maintenance for a log home is not very different from how you would maintain a conventional home with wood siding.  You’ll need to guard your investment by keeping the wood protected with a stain or clear coat sealant.  That means re-applying a high quality product throughout the life of the home.  (Two of the products commonly used are from Perma-Chink and Sashco)   How often you should reapply depends on a lot of factors.  One often overlooked factor is your log home landscaping.

Log Home With RosesMany times log homeowners begin landscaping without any plan in mind, but instead find themselves in the aisle of a nursery staring at something in bloom and saying to themselves “Oooh, that’s pretty” and bringing it home for planting.  And just like a Great Dane puppy, those pretty little plants can get pretty big, pretty fast.  So before you plant your new treasure right next to your log home, stop and think ahead to how big the plant will get.  The number one cause for extensive maintenance, is excessive moisture on your logs.  Plants which are placed too close to the log walls will trap moisture against your logs and block the sun from ever drying them out.  Space your plants far enough away from the walls so that when they grow to their full size, they don’t come close to touching the walls.

And, not only will keeping your plants spaced a few feet out from your walls help reduce how often you’ll need to re-stain your home, it will also make re-staining that much easier.  After all, nobody wants to battle crab-apple branches attacking their face when trying to paint.

Here are some log homes with wise landscaping choices that are not only nice to look at, but won’t be giving the homeowners any extra home maintenance.  From grand beds with big stone, to lovely log cabin gardens, there are a lot of possibilities:

Log Home Exterior With Stone LandscapingThis log home shows how beautiful landscaping goes well beyond a simple foundation planting.  Notice that along the house the landscaping is kept low, open and airy with species like Russian Sage.  In the foreground the homeowners have planted coreopsis, a popular and hardy plant that loves the sun.  You can also see a few Kniphofia (aka Red Hot Poker).

Log Home Exterior With Stone PatioThe rear of the same house shows a larger “foundation” planting that abuts the stone patio.  It’s not a problem to plant larger, more dense plants here because it doesn’t come close to the log walls.   Containers on the patio provide some greenery near the home.

Log Home Front Porch with Pathway LandscapingThis log home has a wonderful covered front porch that allows the homeowner to plant some larger shrubs without the worry of having plants right up against the log walls.

Log Home In the Woods with Dwarf Evergreen PlantingsA lot of trees surround this log home, but none are close up against the exterior walls.  One other factor besides moisture that increases how often you have apply stain, is the sun that can bake south and west facing walls.  Planting some trees that will cast shade on the south and west walls can limit this baking effect and also help control your cooling costs in the summer.  The plants that the homeowners chose for the foundation bed are dwarf species of evergreen such as boxwood.  These dwarf varieties are a good choice and their compact shape provides a log cabin garden feel.  Read more tips on foundation plantings at Lowe’s.
