The Moultonboro Log Home Floor Plan

log home in the woods with porchWe often receive requests from people looking for a log home floor plan that’s not too big, but can still accommodate a number of guests for summer vacations and holiday gatherings alike.  The Moultonboro log home floor plan is one of those plans that really works.  In total the plan is 1,975 square feet, not including basement space.  With a spacious first floor master suite and laundry on the first floor, this log home is comfortable for year round living.

The first floor has a large living room with cathedral ceilings.  It also has an open kitchen and dining area which help to make this home feel more spacious. A covered porch greets visitors as they arrive at this log home.

Once you pass through the kitchen area you enter the great room, complete with cathedral ceiling and impressive stone fireplace.  The loft space is visible from the great room as the log stairs lead up to it.

The loft space can be used as guest quarters for visitors.  The owners of this log home chose to set the loft space up as a bunk room to house visiting grandchildren.  What a treat for the grandchildren as they get to stay in their own lofty space with the charm and fun of a real life tree house.

A Kentucky Real Log Home: Contemporary Meets Traditional

While Kentucky is well known for having the best bourbon in the world, it’s also known for having some of the most beautiful country style log homes in the country. If you’ve never heard of Shelbyville, it happens to be smack dab between Louisville and Lexington, in the heart of northern Kentucky. It’s also home for this weeks’ Real Log Style feature.

A bright and sunny summer’s day showcases a log home perfectly (although log homes love the snow, too). A large gable-end truss sits above custom fixed triangular windows. A two car attached garage helps bridge the storage/work shop and the main house through a cozy attached entryway.

The heat can be unforgiving in Kentucky and the homeowners of this log home wanted to make sure they could stay cool during the summer months. A gorgeous in-ground pool rests next to a post and beam gazebo in the picturesque backyard.

Maybe you’ve seen log home pictures in magazines or in other forms of social media, but had a hard time imagining yourself being in one. The photographer of the above photo was able to make us feel like we’re walking into this magnificent great room. Note: how enchanting are those custom triangular windows?

Why build a Real Log Home? The photo above answers that question without using any words! Full log floor joists provide an ideal canopy over the stunning master bedroom with walkout deck.

A master bath fit for a king (and queen!) boasts gorgeous pine wood floors and expansive vanity. I love how the home owner continued the log floor joists in each room of the log home. Some home owners choose to install sheet rock and have a more traditional ceiling, but you can see the effect of keeping the floor joists exposed – beautiful.

The Sun Shines Bright on This New Kentucky Log Home

A Kentucky couple finds the perfect log home plan—and adds some unique touches to make it their own.

As seen in the 2009 July issue of Country’s Best Log Homes magazine.
Story by: Cynthia Ward Veseykentucky log home with attached garage

This gorgeous Real Log Home was built in Kentucky by couple Sandra and Tim.  Where Tim prefers more traditional log home styling, Sandra is drawn to more modern elements. “I didn’t want  a typical log home with a real ‘country’ look. I wanted it to be more modern,” she explains. Because of their different tastes in decor, the couple, who have been married for 16 years, often had to compromise. “I wanted areas of drywall to add a little color, but Tim wanted all wood,” notes Sandra. While wood is the dominant component of the home, Sandra added her personal touch by brightening the kitchen with white cabinets.

Years of marriage and the ability to give and take came in handy with the furnishings as well—Tim chose the country-style bedroom set, while Sandra picked out the great room’s leather furniture. Tim also chose one of the more dominant accessories: an eye-catching, enormous elk-antler chandelier. He actually bought it before they started building. “When they brought it in on the back of a semi, I knew I was in trouble,” Sandra says.

The house is sited on nearly 70 breathtaking acres, with a view of a sparkling lake teeming with fish. “The house was built around the water,” says Sandra. The 2,400-square-foot home (not including the basement or garage) features contoured white pine logs, which are 8 inches in diameter and notched with a V-shaped groove.

The homeowners were really drawn to an open floor plan and insisted the kitchen, dining and living areas all be open to one another.  You can see the first floor plan here.  The first floor of this log home is 1,564 square feet (you can click the image to see a larger image of the log home plan).

The second floor houses an open loft space, as well as an additional bedroom and storage space.  The upstairs bedroom has an en-suite bath.  The second floor is 858 square feet.

A Small Log Home Floor Plan – The Augusta

The Augusta is a Real Log Home floor plan that packs a lot into 1600 square feet.  It has a first floor master bedroom, first floor laundry, and an open floor plan in the kitchen, dining and great room.  With its wraparound porch, this log home has even more entertaining space via outdoor living.  It’s no wonder why this small log home floor plan has been a popular choice for homeowners for years.

Here is an example of an Augusta plan built right here in New Hampshire as a vacation getaway.  The homeowners added a walk out basement to take advantage of their sloped site.

The first floor is great for gatherings, but it’s also cozy enough to feel at home year round.  I particularly like the kitchen layout.  The kitchen is underneath the loft, so it has a lower ceiling, which provides a bit more intimacy and coziness.  The eat-at counter allows for family to linger in the kitchen and chat with the cook, or can be a place to eat casual meals or breakfasts.  The openness of the kitchen to the dining space also means that the cook is never left out of what’s going on at the dining table.  As dinners finish, guests can easily transition into the great room sitting area as the spaces simply flow into one another.

On the second story, a loft space can serve multiple purposes.  It can be used as a cozy second living room ideal for reading or as an office space.  And if your family has children who will be using the upstairs bedrooms, then it may likely be used as a play space.  The loft space would actually work quite well as a play space as it’s open to see and hear from downstairs, but all the toys and clutter would be kept off the main level.

Finally the bedrooms upstairs share a Jack and Jill style bathroom (A Jack and Jill bathroom is a bathroom that is between two bedrooms and accessible from each)

So be it a vacation getaway, a primary home or a retirement home, this log home floor plan is easily adaptable.  It’s no wonder it continues to be one of Real Log Homes’ more popular plans.  Check out the floor plan at the RLH website and feel free to request information on it such as room dimensions or ask about what changes you might want to make to it.  The designers just love to re-work plans and add new design elements to make a home work just right for a customer.
