Real Log Homes® has a full service design department in house ready to serve its clients in any capacity.  The design staff has a combined experience of over 100 years.  That’s a full century of making the most ideal log home floor plans.

Many clients come to us with a well thought out idea or concept in mind, sometimes even drawings they might have made themselves.  Others come to us with one of our many Standard Log Home Plans in mind.  But, many log home customers start from scratch.  We embrace any approach.  We expect every home to reflect the homeowner; we expect the design process to be unique as well.  It’s worked for 50 years to produce stunning homes like the beautiful log home in rural Montana seen below:

Another benefit of Real Log Homes® and its design process is that our in-house design team works at the same facility as our manufacturing staff.  This means a seamless process when passing the design plans to the manufacturing team.  This seamless transition means less wasted time and money.  That means our clients have less time between blue prints and home building.

The first floor has a large living room with cathedral ceilings.  It also has an open kitchen and dining area which help to make this home feel more spacious. A covered porch greets visitors as they arrive at this log home.

Once you pass through the kitchen area you enter the great room, complete with cathedral ceiling and impressive stone fireplace.  The loft space is visible from the great room as the log stairs lead up to it.

The loft space can be used as guest quarters for visitors.  The owners of this log home chose to set the loft space up as a bunk room to house visiting grandchildren.  What a treat for the grandchildren as they get to stay in their own lofty space with the charm and fun of a real life tree house.

Enjoying Time Spent in the Great Indoors – Log Home Style

Here in New England we recently experienced quite the blizzard.  With this experience we’ve all become newly familiar with the concept of staying in.  When trapped indoors for a while, it can make you think about your home in new ways.  From ‘I have got to get rid of that old wallpaper’, to ‘thank goodness we installed that new furnace last year!’  Being stuck indoors may even have you dreaming of a new home or cabin.  So, to help we’ve compiled a list of the top five ways to pass the winter in a Real Log Home.

1) Bake Some Treats

A kitchen island serves as great prep space to cut out cookies, roll pie dough, or pour fudge.

Nothing says warm and cozy like sweet and savory treats from the oven.  A nice new kitchen with ample counter space to roll cookie dough helps make the experience that much more enjoyable.  Check out one of our favorite winter cookie recipes here.

2)  Watch a movie

This log home great room has a soapstone wood stove, comfy furniture and a big screen TV. We can’t think of a better combination to help pass the time on a cold winter’s day spent indoors.

So long as you have power and some movies on hand, this is a great way to spend some time during rough weather.  Of course the experience is all the more enjoyable in a comfy log home with space for everyone to sit and enjoy.

3)  Get Crafty

Quilting is a popular hobby and even without power, can still be enjoyed. As a bonus, your new quilt will help keep you extra cozy during any blizzards.

If you have a passion for crafting, then what better time to do it than during a blizzard.  While many hobbies, such as wood-working require electricity, there are many hobbies which do not.  Quilting and painting can be done without power.  And if you have a gas powered stove, you can even do some homebrewing with or without power.

4)  Go Crazy on Pinterest

Start pinning your dream log home exteriors, great rooms and kitchens. Then you can share your ideas with our design team.

One of the most popular new aspects of social media is Pinterest.  For those who use it regularly they can attest at how easy it is to collect ideas together.  And, if you’re planning a new log home for this year, it’s a fantastic place to organize your ideas.  And, if you have a Facebook account, you can use the same login to access and start using Pinterest.

5)  Plan A New Log Home

Of course, one of the best ways to spend some time indoors this winter is brainstorming on plans for your new log home or cabin.  Real Log Homes has a lot of log home floor plans to look through.  But it’s also a great time to get out some paper and sketch some ideas.  A basic way to think about floor planning is picture each space as a bubble, and think about what bubbles make sense to touch one another.  You likely wouldn’t put a bedroom bubble touching the kitchen, but it may touch the living room.

But don’t feel too overwhelmed.  One of the best ways to get started is to call Real Log Homes.  Their design staff would be happy to listen to your ideas, review your Pinterest boards or just answer your questions.  You can contact them directly online, or call them at 1-800- REAL LOG (732-5564).

Building a New Log Home in 2013 – Man vs. Woman

husband and wife in log homeWith the recent uptick in confidence in the housing market, many log home enthusiasts are considering making 2013 the year for their new log home or cabin.  Housing starts are up, and many top contractors are already reaching capacity and needing to hire more crew members to keep up.  It’s the right time to get a design drafted and begin construction.  One of the best ways to begin the design process is by defining the top priorities for your new home.  Of course, disagreements are bound to arise in setting the log home design priorities.  Well don’t feel bad, you’re not alone.

A recent poll of couples who were planning to build found that husband and wife often disagree about the order of design priorities.  The poll broke respondents into three age groups, under 30, 31-50 and over 50.  The 31-50 group did have some real agreement between men and women.  The number one priority for both men and women was a “great kitchen.”

This log home kitchen sure looks like a ‘great kitchen’ to us, complete with cathedral ceilings, top end appliances and a bar top counter for guests, or children to sit at.

The second top priority was function.  This underscores just what an advantage it is to build a new log home vs. buying and existing home.  Our skilled design staff knows just what questions to ask to discover what functional needs are the most important for you and your family.  From wide hallways and single level design for those with mobility issues, to storage and play space for children, a new home is designed with function in mind.

The third priority that men and women agree on is ‘family interaction space.’  This can often be found in a great room or dining room.  Having a dining room open to the great room and kitchen can often serve as a hub for children and family to spend time.  Bar stools in the kitchen also let children work on crafts or school work while adults cook or prepare meals.

This log home dining room is the perfect example of a family space. It is centrally located next to the great room, the kitchen and is also open to the outdoor living space. It’s the perfect place for family meals, game night or crafting with the kids.

The fourth priority is where the disagreement starts.  Women pick ‘entertainment space’, while men choose a ‘wonderful master suite.’  Maybe it’s because women can tend to be more social, while men often don’t mind just enjoying some peaceful rest and relaxation.  Women do pick the master suite as their fifth priority though, so they’re not too far off on this design priority.

While women put entertaining space slightly higher than a nice master suite, both men and women put the master suite in their top five priorities. We think many would find this log home dining room, and this master suite quite agreeable indeed.

The fifth priority is also a disagreement, and this may be the most divisive priority.  Women pick the master suite, while men choose ‘garage/workshop’.  The ‘garage/workshop’ does not appear as any of the 10 priorities that women chose.  But, we think that agreeing on the top priorities is a great start to designing your dream log home.  And, our design staff is great at working with couples to help come to an agreement on the overall design.  Contact the Real Log Homes design department today to get started on your log home plans.   You can also read the article regarding the poll’s findings here.

New Year’s Resolutions: Log Home Style

A lot of people, perhaps even the majority, set some sort of New Year’s resolutions for themselves.  We thought it would be fun to see how we can help fulfill some of the most common resolutions with some real log style.

1) Spend More Time With the Family

In this busy age it can be hard to get everyone together as a family.  One way to help get everyone together is to make sure there is a place that everyone looks forward to gathering.  It could be as simple as a cozy dining room with space for everyone, or a new cabin in the woods perfect for holiday gatherings and summer retreats.

This log home would make an ideal getaway for the family to enjoy in both the winter, and the summer. See this log home floor plan here.

And on the more simple end, keeping your home’s dining space open, clutter free and inviting is an easy step to facilitating family time.

This log home dining room is open and inviting with plenty of space for everyone. Having an enjoyable space like this is the first step in getting the family together (even if it’s just for pork chop night).

2) Eat Better

Many feel that this may be the hardest of the resolutions to fulfill.  Make it easy on yourself with an inspirational kitchen.  If you make your kitchen a place where you feel empowered to cook, with all the right tools at your fingertips, and in a space that’s clutter free, then getting carry out will become so last year.

A properly designed kitchen makes preparing healthy meals much easier. Consider a sink large enough to wash produce, a refrigerator with proper compartments for storing green veggies, and high quality cookware that will allow you to use less oils.

3) Exercise More

Going along with eating better, exercising more can be tough.  Get out there and enjoy the wonderful surroundings of your log home.  Snowshoe, hike, kayak and mountain bike – after all nothing goes better with a log home than the great outdoors.

In the winter months one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to get out and exercise is to go snow shoeing.

4) Stay Organized

Do this by planning your log home properly.  Plan ahead for ample closet space, built in storage, and the proper space for your hobbies.  The dining table is not the optimal place for your quilting patterns…

5) Be Happy

It sounds simple, but there’s a lot that goes into being happy.  And there’s a lot about a log home or cabin that can make you happier, such as energy-efficiency that saves you money, and providing a space where the whole family will enjoy getting together.  The thought of living in a natural log home designed just for you certainly brings a smile to our faces.
